Grammar and Punctuation
At Ludlow Junior School, our aim is to develop children who are creative, enthusiastic writers, but also great technical writers. We encourage the acquisition of grammar knowledge naturally and implicitly through interactions with other speakers and from reading. However, explicit teaching of grammar is very important, as it gives us more conscious control and choice in our spoken and written language.
We build children’s grammatical knowledge through specific grammar focuses when teaching reading, writing and speaking. Once our pupils are familiar with a grammatical concept, our aim is to encourage the children and give them the confidence to apply and explore this concept in the grammar of their own speech and writing, in addition to noting where it is used by others.
At Ludlow Junior School, we teach our grammar content in accordance with the National Curriculum, which ensures clear progression in knowledge and skills from the beginning of year 3 through until the end of year 6.
